How to Get Married in Sydney:
The Ultimate Legal Checklist for 2026
Getting married in Sydney involves a clear set of legal steps, and understanding how to get married in Sydney from the very beginning makes the whole process calmer, simpler and far more enjoyable. Whether you’re planning a legals‑only marriage or a full premium wedding ceremony, the legal requirements remain the same — but the experience you choose can be completely different.
As a Sydney Marriage Celebrant, I guide couples through every legal step and help create a ceremony that feels warm, personal and beautifully organised. This guide explains how to get married in Sydney in 2026 and outlines the difference between a legals‑only wedding and a premium celebrant‑led ceremony.
⭐ The 7 Legal Steps to Getting Married in Australia
No matter what type of ceremony you choose, these are the legal requirements for getting married in Sydney:
- Choose an authorised marriage celebrant
- Lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) at least one month before the wedding
- Provide proof of birth, identity, and end of previous marriages
- Discuss your ceremony and legal wording
- Attend separate consent meetings (mandatory since 12 June 2024)
- Hold your wedding ceremony with two witnesses
- Have your marriage registered with Births, Deaths and Marriages
As your celebrant, I take care of every step — and I also apply for and pay for your official Marriage Certificate to speed up the process. Not all celebrants offer this, but I include it because it removes one more task from your list.
Legals‑Only Wedding vs Premium Wedding Ceremony
Many couples researching how to get married in Sydney want to understand the difference between a simple legals‑only marriage and a full premium ceremony. Here’s a clear breakdown.
Legals‑Only Wedding Ceremony in Sydney
A legals‑only marriage is perfect if you want to be married with no fuss, no guests, and limited personalizing of the ceremony — just the legal minimum.
A legals‑only ceremony includes:
- The mandatory legal wording
- Signing the three marriage certificates
- Two witnesses over 18
- A short, simple ceremony (usually 5–10 minutes)
- Lodgement of all documents with Births, Deaths and Marriages
- Your official Marriage Certificate applied for and paid for by me
Ideal for couples who:
- Want a quick, simple marriage
- Are planning a destination wedding later
- Prefer privacy
It’s the legal equivalent of a registry office wedding — but warmer, friendlier and more flexible.

Premium Wedding Ceremony in Sydney
A premium ceremony is the full experience — personal, meaningful, beautifully crafted and delivered with warmth and presence.
A premium ceremony includes:
- A personalised ceremony written around your story
- Guidance, structure, examples and inspiration
- Vows (legal + personal)
- Readings, rituals or cultural elements if you want them
- Music, choreography and timing
- A calm, organised celebrant who manages every detail
- Professional delivery on the day
- All legal steps completed and lodged
- Your official Marriage Certificate applied for and paid for
Ideal for couples who:
- Want a ceremony that feels like them
- Value storytelling, warmth and connection
- Want guests to feel included and engaged
- Prefer a polished, organised experience
- Are marrying at a Sydney venue, beach, park or harbour location
A premium ceremony transforms your wedding from a legal event into a moment you’ll remember for life.

How to Get Married in Sydney: The 7 Legal Steps Explained
Step 1 — Book a Marriage Celebrant
Your celebrant is your first legal requirement. When couples contact me, I provide:
- Clear explanations of every legal step
- A simple, organised process
- Ceremony ideas, templates and examples
- Support from enquiry to ceremony day
Your celebrant becomes your guide through both the legal and personal parts of your wedding.
Step 2 — Lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)
The NOIM must be lodged at least one month before your wedding (and up to 18 months prior).
I will:
- Provide the NOIM
- Help you complete it correctly
- Explain each section in plain English
- Ensure your signatures are witnessed properly
Who can witness the NOIM?
- Marriage Celebrant ( there are significant benefits in your Celebrant witnessing)
- Justice of the Peace
- Doctor
- Police Officer
- Lawyer
If you’re overseas, different rules apply — I guide couples through this regularly.
Step 3 — Provide Your Proof of Birth, Identity & End of Previous Marriages
You must show your celebrant:
For identity:
- Passport (covers birth + identity), or
- Birth Certificate + Driver’s Licence / Proof of Age Card
If previously married:
- Divorce Certificate, or
- Death Certificate
These can be shown anytime before the wedding.
Step 4 — Discuss Your Sydney Wedding Ceremony
This is where your ceremony becomes personal.
We explore:
- Your story
- Readings or rituals
- Cultural elements
- Music and structure
- Legal vows and personal vows
If you’re unsure where to begin, I provide inspiration and examples.
Step 5 — Separate Consent Meetings & the Declaration of No Impediment
Since 12 June 2024, celebrants must meet with each partner separately and in person to confirm real consent.
You will then sign the Declaration of No Impediment confirming:
- Your name and occupation
- Where you live
- That you are of marriageable age
- That there is no legal barrier to your marriage
I prepare this form and advise the correct timing.
Step 6 — Your Wedding Ceremony In Sydney
On the day, I deliver the ceremony you’ve planned and ensure all legal wording is included.
You will need:
- Two witnesses over 18
- To sign three marriage certificates
My role is to guide you through every moment so you can relax and enjoy the experience.
Step 7 — Registration of Your Marriage
After your ceremony, I lodge all legal documents with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
I also:
- Apply for your official Marriage Certificate
- Pay for it on your behalf
- Ensure it is posted directly to you
Your certificate is essential for:
- Name changes
- Updating passports and licences
- Bank and government records
